04.13.2017 – Apr. 13th, 2017 – A Tragic Reminder: Still No Legal Protection for Canada’s Youngest Victims of Crime

The debate over pre-born victims of crime in Canada has tragically come to the forefront once again as the nation learned of the murder of 27-year-old Arianna Goberdhan and her pre-born baby in Pickering, Ontario this past weekend.

According to current Canadian law, a homicide has only been committed against a child if the child dies after becoming a human being; And the definition of when a child becomes human is only after he or she has fully proceeded from the body of its mother.

This means that although Arianna’s husband is facing charges for her death, he will not face charges for the death of his baby – just hours or days away from delivery – for which he is just as responsible.
