When meeting with your MP, Senator, MLA or City officials it is important to know the issues that they are debating at that time. We can speak into any issue at any time, however, it is most effective to speak into the issues that are on the 'table' of debate right before them.

What Do I Talk To My MP/Senator about ?

The bottom line is that you need to talk to them about whatever 'burns' on your heart.

Once you determine what that is (and get informed on the issue that burns in your heart), it is strategic to talk to your MP/Senator about Bills that are currently on the 'table' because these are the things that they can influence and will be likely voting on in the next months. Use this page to give you an overview of bills on the table right now that we feel are ones you should be aware of. This is NOT an exhaustive list to search for bills yourself you can also visit the PARLIAMENT OF CANADA WEB SITE directly. You can also talk you MP/Senator about issues that you would like them to introduce legislation on.

BILLS WE ARE WATCHING WITH PARTICULAR INTEREST

C-268 - HUMAN TRAFFICKING (Joy Smith, Conservative) - GOOD - Passed in June!!

An Act to amend the Criminal Code (minimum sentence for offences involving trafficking of persons under the age of eighteen years)

This bill will bring in mandatory minimum sentences of 5 years for anyone who trafficks a minor.

Bill C-22 – PROTECTING CHILDREN FROM ON-LINE SEXUAL EXPLOITATION ACT (Minister Nicholson, Conservative) - GOOD

This bill has been introduced by the Justice Minister. It was from the last session of Parliament but died when the session ended.  

It makes reporting child sexual abuse images mandatory for all Canadians including Internet Service Providers.

Bill C-300 – RESPONSIBLE MINING BILL (John McKay, Liberal) - GOOD

This bill has been introduced by Private Member John McKay. C-300 seeks to ensure that Canadian extractive companies that operate in developing countries and receive funding from the Government of Canada comply with internationally agreed upon and human rights and environmental standards.

C-510 - AN ACT TO AMMEND THE CRIMINAL CODE (Coercion) (Rod Bruinooge, Conservative) - GOOD

This bill will make it illegal to pressure a woman (coerce) to have an abortion. It has been tabled and will likely have First Reading and begin it's Parliamentary process in September of 2010.

C-269 - An Act to amend the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (victim ó trafficking in persons). First Reading. Mrs. Jennings (Liberal).

C-302 - An Act to recognize the injustice that was done to persons of Italian origin through their ìenemy alienî designation and internment during the Second World War, and to provide for restitution and promote education on Italian-Canadian history. In committee. Mr. Pacetti (Liberal).
