REPORT FROM THE HILL:Announcement that Morgentaler has Been Chosen for The Order of Canada Now Out
Our team has just come back from Parliament Hill working to let the Governor General and national media know what is already quite obvious: there are MANY Canadians that are in strong disagreement with the appointment of Henry Morgentaler to the Order of Canada. The official announcement came through a news release from the Governor General's office [ click here to go there to read ] this afternoon. But before we go any further we want you to know this: IT IS NOT OVER. We can (and need to) still resist this. REPORT FROM THE HILL: Our team gathered on Parliament Hill with some signs that we felt would impart our message to the Governor General. For no obvious reason the Hill security was quite assertive (if not aggressive) with us, refusing to let our team raise signs anywhere near the Governor General's proximity. The intimidation of the on-hill security was quite surprising considering we were very peaceful, everyone around us agreed with us and we live in a nation that is supposed to pride itself in free speech. That, however, will be a topic of future e-mails. Many organizations have made strong statements to the press already. Along with this our director, Faytene Kryskow, had opportunity to share with CBC for tonight's national news.

Though the announcement was made today, the actual award will be given at a ceremony to be held at a 'later date.' There have been 2 times (that we are aware of) in Canadian history when people have had the award revoked. Let's believe for a 3rd. If our leaders hear a loud enough out cry, it is possible. Morgentaler is not a heroe. YOUR CALLS/E-MAILS AND FAX'S MADE A DIFFERENCE: Firstly, we want to let you know that your calls, e-mails and faxes so far have actually made a MASSIVE difference. The announcement was supposed to be made yesterday at 2pm but because of how many calls the Governor General's Office and other offices received they 'postponed' the announcement out of fear that if they made it prior to the Canada Day Celebrations that those who disagree may have showed up in masses to protest. Not wanting to risk this, they decided to announce it today. This speaks volumes and means your voices are being taken note of in a significant way. _ WHAT YOU CAN DO: 1) Continue to contact the Governor General's office, and, the Order of Canada Chancellery. *NEW DIRECT PHONE LINE CONTACT NUMBERS: We now have the direct line to the Governor General's Secretary and the order of Canada's Secretary. This is much better than the switch board number we had for you yesterday. We have not yet found a direct e-mail for them, so, for now this direct phone number is likely the best way to go!
2) E-mail the General E-mails (though this may be less effective than a call, we encourage you to both call and e-mail!):
3) Please continue to write articles to your local, regional and national media expressing your disapproval of this announcement today (on Canada Day). is this man your heroe? If not, let our leaders know.
