MP Stephen Woodworth has tabled a Motion calling on the government to re-visit Section 223 (1) of the Criminal Code, a 400 year old law that states that a child becomes a human when it has fully exited from the body of its mother. This Motion would launch a debate into the medical evidence of when children in the womb become human. ________________________________________________ JOY SMITH'S HUMAN TRAFFICKING BILL IN SENATE COMMITTEE
Click here for sample email to send to MPs. Joy Smith has tabled her second Private Members' bill, C-310, to combat human trafficking in Canada and abroad. C-310 amends the Criminal Code so that Canadians who are trafficking people in other nations would be subject to Canada's laws. This is a huge step in Canada taking responsibility for our citizens and also discourages traffickers from moving people to places where human trafficking laws are the most lenient. C-310 also adds specific examples of exploitation to the Criminal Code to help law enforcement officials when laying charges of human trafficking. On March 30th, the NDP party decided to block its passage to the Senate for another two months. To read a press release from Joy Smith about it, click here. Conservative MPs Harold Albrecht and Royal Galipeau switched debates times with Mrs. Smith so that her bill can continue to make its way to the Senate despite the NDPs attempt to block it. ________________________________________________ PROSTITUTION RULING ANNOUNCED: BROTHELS TO BE LEGALIZED UNLESS APPEALED
On March 26, the Ontario Superior Court released its ruling on the Ontario's prostitution case, upholding the current law that bans communicating for the purposes of selling sex, partially striking down the law criminalizing living off the avails of prostitution (except for cases of exploitation), and legalizing brothels. Parliament has 30 days to review and respond to the section on living off the avails of prostitution and 12 months to re-draft legislation regarding the ban on brothels. Legalizing brothels and decriminalizing prostitution in Canada will inevitably lead to increased sex trafficking and child exploitation. MP Joy Smith has been advocating for Canada to adopt the Nordic model of prostitution laws (criminalizing buying sex instead of selling it). The sex trade in Sweden has almost disappeared since the re-wrote their laws and re-trained their police force in 1999.

Canada is one of the only western nations that does not have a National Suicide Prevention Strategy, despite the fact that Canada's First Nation and Inuit youth have some of the highest suicide rates in the world. MP Harold Albrecht has tabled a Private Members' Bill, C-300, that calls on the Government to create a Suicide Prevention Strategy with the help of non-government organizations both provincially and federally. If this bill passes, Canada will have to do this (a bill is binding, which means that there must be follow-through). ________________________________________________ BILL C-304: PROTECTING FREEDOM TABLED IN THE HOUSE OF COMMONS

Click here to find out who was elected in your area. ____________________________________________________________________ RETRO TOPIC FROM LAST PARLIAMENT: PROTECTING VULNERABLE WOMEN FROM COERCED ABORTION OPPOSED BY PARLIAMENT (DEC. 15TH) On December 15th Parliament voted 97 to 178 in favour of NOT bringing in stronger measure to protect pregnant women from harassment (coercion) when they choose life. This is a stunning verdict - especially for a government whose expressed agenda is to be "tough on crime" and also support a women's right to "choose." This was a bill where all sides of the debate should of been able to agree. The fact that it was voted down is stunning and Canadians should be shocked by how far things have gone on this issue. In the days to come we will be posting the voting records of MPs so that you can e-mail the MPs that had the courage to vote yes for this important piece of legislation and so that you can e-mail your MP and express disappointment if they did not support it (FYI - our Prime Minister and Justice Minister voted against the bill).
